Sylvia Wayfer Baker, Esq.
WE SHOULD BE WORKING EVERY DAY TO
ENACT POLICIES TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD
-
I want the Government to be as effective as needed in order to accomplish policy goals.
-
I am a strong supporter of environmental protection, even at the expense of job creation.
-
We MUST have sensible gun control. The law allows for the right to keep and bear arms, but there can and should be reasonable limits placed on the kinds of weapons, ammunition, and accessibility. At the very least, you should demonstrate as much competence as is required by people who want to be able to drive cars. It is easier to buy a gun in Georgia than it is to vote.
-
I will fight to expand access to health insurance. Too many Americans are dying of preventable and treatable illnesses; doctor bills are egregiously high, and far too many Americans have to declare bankruptcy for seeking basic medical care.
-
I support higher levels of taxation for the wealthy to fund needed programs.
-
I have no sympathy for the pecuniary interests of the rich. I am unsympathetic to efforts by large financial firms to take huge risks that benefit them when they pay off, and leave taxpayers on the hook when they fail.
-
I am a defender of the social safety net we have in place; Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment, and Welfare Programs in the U.S.; programs that protect low-income or homeless citizens.
Affordable Healthcare
I believe everyone should have access to good affordable health care; to go beyond Governor Kemp’s piecemeal solution to Medicaid expansion. We need to fully expand Medicaid to ensure that more Georgians have access to affordable healthcare coverage.
Affordable Housing
The home is the foundation of a community and as Atlanta continues its rapid growth, housing prices are skyrocketing, roads are deteriorating and Georgians are systematically being displaced from their homes. As Wall Street firms have now become landlords, hardworking families are faced with fast-rising rent increases and the possibility of never achieving homeownership. We need stronger housing protections as well as incentives for local governments to help reduce housing costs. I believe every person deserves a home that is safe and affordable.
Economic Development
Georgia thrives when we create opportunities for all to succeed, and all Georgians deserve access to quality employment that pays a fair, living wage, including equal pay for women. We must continue to provide a climate that creates job opportunities for all residents. Small businesses and working families are the backbone of our economy.
Education
I oppose diverting resources away from public schools and I support initiatives to strengthen our education system. All Americans deserve a basic public education and access to affordable advance education or training. Not everyone may want to go to college, but everyone needs training beyond high school to make MORE than a livable wage.
Women's Reproductive Rights
I am a strong supporter of reproductive freedom and healthcare privacy, and I believe that every woman has the RIGHT to make her own healthcare decisions along with her doctor. It is inconceivable that we still have people opposed to contraception mandates. This is something I proudly intolerant and where I have no desire whatsoever to compromise.
